Besides offering guided nature walks and other activities at The Cliffs Estate, we also offer guided tours in the locality for pre-organized groups.
Last week we facilitated a large French student group. After a welcome morning coffee on our terrace and an audiovisual presentation about the locality held in the interpretation boardroom, we gave a guided tour to the Clapham Junction, where we descended and explored Ghar il-Kbir, a large cave complex. It was inhabited since ancient times until the last dwellers, an extensive farming community consisting multiple families got evicted and moved to the nearby villages by the british governor at the time due to sanitary and tax reasons. Other than the caves, the area also hosts ancient cart ruts, dated to at least 2000 BC but could be way older according to other studies. They can be found at this location in the highest density on the islands, more than 40 cart ruts can be seen criss-crossing the landscape resembling a busy train station, hence the name Clapham Junction. Next to the caves, there are also three rock cut ‘shaft & chamber’ punic tombs dating back to the punic period that lasted from 7th century BC until 3rd century AD.
After exploring the area, we went to the Buskett Gardens where the group enjoyed their packed lunch provided by The Cliffs kitchen, consisting of a traditional tuna ftira, ciabatta, mqaret and a local orange. Along the way we also stopped by some small fields and discussed what seasonal crops farmers are growing at the moment.
